India became formally independent of the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947. The Republic of India, located in South Asia and comprising most of the Indian subcontinent is the second most populous country in the world and is the world's largest democracy, with over one billion people and more than one hundred distinct languages. Today India has moved miles away from its legendary tag ‘democratic country’ means ‘of the people, for the people and by the people’, however we today are living in absolute ‘Minister Raaj’; the Indian Minister has supreme power and Right to Rule as they like.

Indianpoliticians.com online gives its readers worldwide an overview of Indian politicians. Indianpoliticians.com is reaching a rapidly increasing global readership. Ever since independence in 1947, many locations in India have changed their names. Much of this resulted from the reorganization of the states on linguistic lines (as opposed to British colonial divisions).

India is said to be the largest nation on Earth with a democratically-elected government. Like the United States, India has a federal form of government. India has 28 states and 7 union territories. States have their own elected governments, whereas Union Territories are governed by an administrator appointed by the union (federal) government.

Let’s talk about some of the India’s famous leaders.

  • Mahatma Gandhi became one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders of the 1900's. The Indian people called Gandhi Mahatma, meaning Great Soul.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of newly independent India, said on the day of his assassination, "the light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere".
  • Indira Gandhi (19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was the first woman to become Prime Minister of India. She is the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, who was also Prime Minister of India. In 1938, Indira finally joined the Indian National Congress Party .
  • Rajiv Gandhi was heir to the political heritage of his mother and grandfather  Jawaharlal Nehru. Rajiv was a pilot by profession. Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Minister of the World's largest Democracy. He strengthened India's political, economic and cultural bonds with other countries.
  • Sonia Gandhi also became the fifth from the Nehru family to take over the Congress reins. The other four were Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Although Sonia could have become the first foreign-born Indian Prime Minister, she declined the opportunity. If Sonia had become Prime Minister, she would have been the fourth member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to become Prime Minister of India following in the footsteps of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
